Functional English Tutor - Prison Education | OLASS

Location: HMP Stocken
Salary: From £30,000
Contract: Permanent | Full‑time

Working Hours:
Monday – Thursday: 7:45am – 5:00pm
Friday: 7:45am – 12:30pm


The Role

Based on‑site at HMP Stocken, this role offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference through education. As a Functional Skills and Generalist Cover Tutor, you will deliver Higher‑Level English tutoring and Functional Skills provision to small groups of prison‑based learners.

You will support learners to develop essential skills, knowledge, confidence, and positive behaviours, helping them work towards long‑term goals and sustainable progression beyond custody. You will ensure appropriate training plans are in place, provide effective advice and guidance, and deliver high‑quality, engaging learning that enables learners to reach their potential.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Functional Skills English and Maths, alongside generalist education delivery
  • Work with small learner groups in a structured, supportive environment
  • Develop and implement effective individual learning and training plans
  • Use a wide range of teaching methods to engage and motivate learners
  • Provide ongoing advice, guidance, and learner support
  • Maintain accurate learner records and meet quality and compliance requirements
  • Work collaboratively as part of a prison‑based education team

Essential Criteria

Applicants must meet the following essential requirements:

  • Level 5 qualified Teacher (e.g. Cert Ed, PGCE, DET, or equivalent)
  • Level 3 Functional Skills qualification in English and Maths
  • Relevant experience delivering Functional Skills provision
  • Experience delivering training or education to adult learners
